The Holi festival celebrates the defeat of an evil demoness named Holika in Hindu mythology. Although, it originated in India, it is celebrated by Hindu communities around the world, on the day of the full moon closest to the spring equator.
Holi begins by lighting huge bonfires that honor the fire that consumed Holika. During the day's revelry, people splash each other with water and colored powers called gulal.
